In my opinion the major High Street banks have never had much interest in the SME sector although it would be politically incorrect of them to admit this. What little interest they had completely evaporated four years ago when the Privy Council ruled in the Brumark case that the bank's fixed charge on the trade debts was invalid and was actually a floating charge that ranked much further down the pecking order in the event of the company's insolvency.

I don’t think blaming the large high street banks is the lesson here for SMEs. The survey results have very little to do with The Privy Council ruling on the so called Brumark case as suggested above
. For anyone who doesn't know - The Brumark (a new zealand company) case is not yet law in the UK.For me the survey shows how the small banks (AIB, Yorkshire and Clydesdale) are able to deliver better services to their customers by ‘focusing’ successfully on ‘niche’ segments of the market even though they don’t have the ‘economies-of-scale’ of their larger rivals. The only exception here is HSBC (until their takeover of Midland Bank, they did not have any big presence in UK but they seem to have kept their ‘focus’ after the takeover). The list can be replicated in almost every industry. E.g. BMW makes more profits than GM or Ford even though BMW sells far fewer cars than GM or Ford. Other examples, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways, The Body Shop and Boots..... Therefore the lesson here is that being small is not necessarily a bad thing. If you have the right strategy and; focus on your niche segment fully then you can deliver better services to your customers, which would inevitably result in higher profits .Regards, Interested in 100% Property Development Finance?
