I am sure that most of you that run small businesses in the UK see that our mate G Brown and his merry men (sorry women) are about to help you to sink even more from April 5 2009, that's cheering news yes? Yes that stupid lot are to put your department store tax's up by a massive 5%, that should help you to decide to close your shop if trade is lower than last year. O yes another thing to help us hard done by shop owners is that the number 10 tribe are to make more laws to force you to give your staff much more time off work, so you can take on another person to help you fill your opening hours. Yes even more good news to help you sink, if people buy a large order from you, and they want it on tick, HP, or whatever and they run a dept up to say £15,000 in goods, and they have no intention to ever pay you for it, the NO 10 tribe are to order you to wipe the dept off because it makes the lady who had the goods depressed and very very upset, o yes and sad. So that is Gordon's tips for you to help you keep your shop going, and he will be, sorry the Job Centre staff will be awaiting you when you sling in the towel, and admit defeat, and wonder why you bothered to even start your business in the first place. O what fun, the UK is so kind to us.

How about revising a few laws, such as the small business corporation tax regime introduced by Gordon Brown as Chancellor in 2005? That was the year that he scrapped marginal relief for small companies with taxable profits between £10,000 and £50,000. This, plus a hike in the tax rate from 19% to 21% since then has added up to a significant hike in the tax take. An extreme example is a company with an £11,000 net profit, £5,000 of fixed assets b/fwd and £1,500 more acquired in the year, all of which have been depreciated at 25%.

In 2005 this company would have paid £184 in tax.
In 2009 this company will be paying £2.126 in tax.
An increase of 1055%.

Just to underline Brown's often cited committment to small business, multiply the profit and asset figures above by x1000 (i.e. profits £11,000,000 etc.) to turn this company into a very big one and this time the tax take has fallen by 2% between 2005 and 2009.

Unfortunately this measure did not attract anything like the attention that was the case in the abolition of the 10P tax band for income tax at the time. However when the economy needs small businesses more than ever before one would have imagined that someone in government would have had the wit to take a second look at this.

Joe.
