Bar Codes -

This may seem rather Naive (spelling?*?)
How are barcodes allocated? For selling products will I just print a barcode on the back and the shop will configure it? How can I be sure that such a barcode does not already exist? Thanks.

Bar codes are allocated by HMRC.
