Christmas dinner - 18-12-2007, 10:28 AM

Most companies have the "Christmas do" and I'm asuming this can be deducted from their taxable profit.

Can the same be done in a Sole Trader situation i.e. Can I take my wife out for a meal and claim it as a Company expense?

Just a thought!

Mike

Is it a business expense? What is the benefit to the company?

A works Christmas do is a thank you to the staff for all their efforts. A business lunch takes place to promote the business.

I'm not sure taking your wife out for a meal meets either of these criteria so my answer would be no but I'm sure someone else will be along soon to confirm or deny.

Oh we wish! We'd be out dining every night.

The official answer is no you cannot claim a dinner out with your wife as an expense.
However, practically speaking, if it is a one-off you'll probably get away with it as the annual christmas dinner tax allowance per staff member is about £150 if I can remember correctly.

The £150 allowance covers a financial year and pertains to any 'treat' provided to staff (excluding bonus payments).
