I think you need to talk to businesslink, you local tax office and trading standards.

The processes aren't difficult but it's not something you should attempt without help. Give the local tax office a call, they are very helpful.

It need not be difficult at all. You will have to appoint a shipping agent to 'clear' the goods through customs - It is not recommended that you try to do this yourself. They will be able to advise you as to the rates of import duty payable for the various items you intend to bring in and arrange settlement for you as and when the goods arrive at the UK port.

VAT is payable on goods imported from outside the EU. Officially this is payable at the point of entry but it may be possible to obtain a one month deferral. Again the shipping agent can advise you. There's more on this that may be helpful to you at:

if you purchase not large quantity, you can ship goods by express, then you only pay the freight charge,no need to pay importing tax.
but if you ship goods by sea, then you need to pay logistic charge, custom tax etc.

Get tax vat import / expore advice from your local tax office. amazingly they are normally very helpful but dont try and do it without as the fines for non vat imports are large and often not worth the effort.

Yes you can. You can import goods, the restriction is on ready made garments coming from outside the EU. All ready-made garments coming from China have to be declared as I understand the quota is still active, so you have to have someone declaring it, which can cost an arm and a leg. But I would suggest, you buy from India or Pakistan. You'll just have to pay for freight and duty. All ready made garments coming into the UK will carry import duty which has a VAT component which you can claim back, but not the duty itself.

The next issue is finding a supplier that can do your colours and your design and in your desired fabrics in small quantity. As I always say, it has been done and it can be done again. Spend time with your local customs and revenue guys, be clear to them that you're about to bring in some ready made garments. From the little understanding that I have, they might ask you to register on their online system, this way, you can pay for your duties and VAT while your consignment is in transit. I might be wrong, dont quote me but I think thats what they're trying to do. If you set that uup now, you'll find that life is a breeze. My advice is, try and do it yourself first, have a feel at what goes on, frieght forwarders, are going to chew you if you're just starting up. Drop me a line if you want some help.....cheers,

The Scattman.
