Hi

I've recently started a business (Limited company) and my first venture was to create a website that allows visitors to submit and read reviews of work carried out by tradesmen throughout the UK (eg: builders, plumbers etc ..)

I have a section that allows tradesmen to upload their contact details into a database for the benefit of public viewing and it is slowly but surely starting to build quite nicely.

My question is: I have 1600 other tradesmen contacts + telephone numbers which I have found advertised on the internet and I would like to add them to my database. Are you aware of any rules that prohibit me from doing this as I don't want to break any confidentiality laws. (data protection etc ...)

I'm trying to be careful as the website has received over 2400 page hits in approx a month and a half. I've stuck to the rules so far and don't want to make any mistakes that could jepardise the success of what has proved to be a popular idea.

Note: The website url is: http://www.trustedtradesmen.com if you need a look at it.

Thanks for your time. Andy

Hi Andy

Yes you need to be careful for 2 reasons.

1, data protection
2, your website image and trust

The interest is a strange place and to be honest if 1000 sites added our site to their directories etc I would be happy - but others are not and there are data protection laws

With your website - it would be great if it was singing and dancing from day 1 - but let people add the information - afterall, it is a trusted site, not just another boring directory

You are doing well already, just build up your profile
