Puchase Ledger and Payroll

Taken over running of small school as a going concern.
Purchase ledger currently consists of "big red book".
Any suggestions as to basic purchase ledger software available - ideally it should run in a MS Excel type format but could also be stand alone software.
Also the payroll is currently outsourced and would like to bring back in house.
Again any suggestions as to basic payroll software - number of staff approx 15.

we use microsoft money - simple and efficient - and integrates into excel etc
