Web-design - 11-12-2007, 06:14 PM

Hi all, two little things, first of all, I could really do with a little bit of feedback on our website

wwwdotflexhypenonlinedotcodotuk

We go into a competition with it next week and so any advice on what needs improving etc would be useful

Secondly, we're under a contract with a web-designer whereby our young enterprise company recieves 25% of profits from any referrals, so if your looking for a high quality web-designer for £200, please visit wwwdotinterwebsdotorg and name me as the referer if you decide to use them

Hi Matt,

First question: What is purpose of the website? For any business to be successful you need to have a reason to exist, in the case of your website I can't identify what that reason is. You have a products page, events and news, none of which seem to have any relationship to each other. If it is a portal to promote your business then it doesn't really do that, if is an online store then why the news and events page.

Second question: Why does your primary navigation have the 'about us' page as the second link? Nobody cares about you, people will visit a website to get information, be entertained or buy something - they are not interested in who you are.

Third question: Who is your target audience? Unless you know you cannot work on your content as this needs to be directed to their needs.

Next up is the design. Nice and simple, that's good. But from a standards point of view it fails. Ask your designer why they used structural tables, you could have built the whole thing using CSS. And the CSS itself could be tightened up a lot - a bit of concatenation would make it a lot cleaner and easier to mange. The use of DW styles was a bit of a giveaway as to how the site was built.

Usability and Accessibility: the colours could case a few problems for those with visual impairment (green and blue in combination are not so good for certain types of colour blindness. And try using % or em sizes for your fonts rather than pixels.

Apart from that it's a nice looking site - just needs a bit of thought as to what your hope to achieve.

Effective Web Design - It's not that difficult if you follow the rules.

Design issues aside, it's cool that you guys are even trying this sort of thing. I'm impressed.

What is the competition for? Design wise the site doesnt have much WOW factor, isnt valid and doesnt really stand out.

I took a look at it 20 seconds ago, and I can remember the name, you need to brand it more
