IS definition... help please!

Hiya Im reviewing the threats on an IS and the processes IS directors need to take to ensure the IS are adequately protected. However Im getting a bit confused about the definition of an IS... I understood it to be information system but if u put an "s" on the end to make it systems the definition changes... what is meant by an IS????
