A Manager in corporate terms, is somebody who manages company resources in a most efficient possible manner. Now the resources I am talking about are: Human, Financial, and Temporal. A good manager succesfully manages the play of all these resources. Assuring high productvity from a group of people using the most cost effective way in a timely manner, and doing it again and again: that sums up the job of a manager.
Simple example to differentiate between a manager and a director: While going on a project to cut trees for timber in a jungle, a director climbs the tallest tree and shouts 'right jungle', then a manager has to make sure that the jungle is cut as per the target.

Well one compliments another.

I think Fayol's management principles are testament of this: planning, organising (resources, ie HR), leading and controlling.

It depends on the function you are in and probably the organisation type e..g a marketing manager will plan, organise, direct and control staff and marketing projects - this is a completley broad question and open to interpretation, there's no right answers !
