Hi Phil,

Thanks once again for your kind comments.

I was just looking at those buttons last week and I want to change them or maybe even move them somewhere else...I'm still thinking.

Cheers,
Nigel

Yes you're absolutely right - just thinking of those still on dial-up access.

Thanks for that Phil.

I used http://www.1-hit.com/.

They also have quite a few useful utilities (at the bottom of the right column) - I haven't had a chance to play check them out yet...but I've just added it to my Favourites!

Cheers,
Nigel

Phil

You've picked up on a good point

When google is cleaning up its index you'll see your site urls listed as "supplementary result" and this means the link is on its way to deletion because it is seen as duplicate contenet

When you just see a link (as with BBs case) these are basically out of the index and will not return in the results

You can wave bye bye to those pages

Google thinks they are dups and has recently ramped up how it defines dup content

I basically had to re-write my entire site a couple of days ago to ditch stuff that was the same on a lot of pages

I think you can get away with navigation, but the same ad text or even copywrite text can get you blown away

Hi,

That's a very interesting subject about which details the robots collect and which they choose to ignore. I'm quickly beginning to appreciate how complex and technical SEO can be. There are plenty of tools out there to give you the data, but it's the interpretation and analysis that drives you up the wall!

It's interesting to see the results for the "google site:" keyword. I was aware that the google bot picks up a lot my list of categories as text content - I guess because they are in one of the first tables. This may cause it to believe it is duplicate content.
For my dynamic pages, the title, meta keywords and meta description are picked up from the database and are (mostly) specific to the category or sub-category.

I am thinking of placing some introduction text at the top of each sub-category page to help break away from the standard "template".
However, I guess I need to ensure the robots get to see that content before a the long list of categories, otherwise every page will appear very similar!

Yet more homework to do...Thanks for all the little pointer - it certainly makes you think!

Cheers,
Nigel
