Constructive criticism welcomed! - 10-12-2007, 12:47 PM

Hi all,

www.business-healthcheck.co.uk

Love the idea of this forum, i'd also love any sort of feedback on our new website that we're currently trying to drive traffic to. We operate mostly offline so do get traffic from customers that our field reps have already visited, however these are customers who are already interested in our service - so really want to focus on getting traffic from google + other online sources.

I've only just started familiarising myself with Adwords, and can see that its going to take a while to even get a click.

Initial impressions? - can you get a good idea of what we do without an explanation from myself?!

As you'll be able to see our site is rather sales orientated, and we are essentially a sales company. However our new proposition aims to detract from the usual sales process and provide a personal service to our clients.

The fact that we are independent from our suppliers, and that we would rather build a long term 'account management' relationship with clients, than selling a product irrelevant of wether the customer needs it, is the key message.

Any comments or advice on the design/layout/depth of our site would be much appreciated - also any tips on the best ways to get more traffic would be great!

Our largest online competitors are the likes of Uswitch and confused etc - all of our services are exclusively B2B and all correspondence & quotes are face to face and tailored to the customers biz. Required investment for a full comparison site means that at this stage this site is intended entirely for lead generation.

Many thanks to all in advance, i'll be sure to check back for any suggestions!

Back to basics. What do you want the site to achieve? Who are your potential customers?

Neither of these questions are answered on the home page - it's all about you and that bloke is looking at me - it's really off-putting. Did you know for example that people in images should always be looking at the copy you want your visitors to read.

There is no call to action, no reason to ring - in fact there is nothing to catch my eye on the homepage at all. 2 seconds is all you get, if the visitor doesn't know what you do in that time then they will already be looking for an escape route.

There is also a major issue with the actual site design but it is pointless to work on this until you know what it is you ant the site to do.

Top Tip - write some advertising copy and get your sales team to use it. If it works then that's what you need to put on the site.

Note: ask your designer why they have broken just about every usability and accessibility rule as well as producing a design that fails a whole bunch of web standards.

Effective Web Design - It's not that difficult if you follow the rules.

Thanks very much for this. Having not been involved in the design of this site I am going to propose a complete re-design. Our target customer is every small to medium size business in the uk - fully appreciate what you're saying though - we obviously need to profile our target market better before even starting to try to get them to call.

Again, because we've been using direct marketing to get clients up to this stage - the copy on the page is generally what we've been saying to customers. However as you've said, what makes a customer call us up on their own accord is clearly going to be very different to what makes a customer let us visit their premesis after us calling them directly.

You've given me a starting point on what is going to be a big task!

Many thanks for your quick reply

Ps - are there any accesibility/usability/standards issues in particular that are wrong? will be having words with our designer - unfortunately looks like we've been duped a bit in the sense that we put full faith in our designer to come up with a site, noone here had any standards to judge it by.
