Could you guys give me an opinion on my website -
10-04-2007, 01:14 PM
Basically i have had this ste designed and i've been attracting about 50 hits a day for the past couple of months. The site is basically a mail order catalogue that specialises in providing a broad range of gift ideas.
Some of my keywords are doing pretty good considering i don't have a PR. Girly gifts is on the bottom of the first page and top of second. Basically i'd like you guys with a lot more knowledge than me, to suggest how best to improve my hits, and to give your opinion on my website in general. Would really appreciate all your help! Kind Regards Jon |

The target audience is middle aged women with time and money on there hands. but obviously were not looking to exclude anyone and to be fair 90% of our customers have been middle aged women.
The look of the website to average Joe or Maggie as the case is seems to not be a prob, they like the simplicity of the blue on the white. Product descriptions i completely agree with they are straight from suppliers but i have/am in the process of changing and editing those. From an SEO point of view i agree getting a page rank will be tricky the way it is and in the future will be sorted out. But considering i have a PR of 0 i do rank quite nicely on google for decent phrases like "Girly Gifts" Price wise as everyone will know is pretty irrelevant, you go look on iwoot.com or firebox and the pyramat lounger in question is the same price. I need advice more on getting more hits to the site, as proven customers will buy and pretty much stay loyal if the service is right, yes they can compare prices, but my particular segment i'm aiming at tend not to compare prices as much and go more for look. The contact details are in 3 or 4 places and the contact us link is pretty clearly shown at the top with the other links and i have recently added a process bar when paying that shows how far before the checkout phase is complete. Really appreciate the responses, would anyone have any creative ideas on how to increase hits? Kind Regards Jon |

How do you know they like the simplicity and colours? Of those 50 visitors per day how many converted? If one assumes that normal conversion rate of 2% you should get 1 sale a day. If it is less than that then it means most visitors don't like the site.
Ok, if you are targeting middled aged women (how do you know?) then why not make that the focus of the homepage (instead of the first category being boys toys). Why are they featured products? What makes them so special? A few words from you you make all the difference. The SEO thing is fundamental to the design. Yous developer really should know better than to us an image as the H1 and even adding those horrible spammy metatags. Contact details? There is nothing at all on your contact page - where is the address, telephone number and mailto link? Price is very important. What evidence do you have that potential customers do not compare prices? If you want to get hits you need to do some SEO. If you want to improve your conversion rate you need to make the site as usable and accessible as possible. So write like billyo and get the developer to work on the site. Note: I tried you buy something. Clicked on the add to shopping bag link and nothing happened. I expected to see something. It turns out the shopping bag is off screen so I didn't know anything had been added. I then went to checkout and my bag was empty. Tried again. clicked on an item, tried to add a second and both dissapeared. I then clicked again and ended up on a different page. This sort of thing will lose you customers hand over fist. A few ideas for you. |

Have to agree... you have email and telephone on terms and privacy page but not your contact page. You are also recommended to have a physical address to (a requirement if you are a Ltd company)
Your image alt tags should have a lot more of your key words in to help with SEO rather than just "mainimage" The lines dont meet up on the borders of the div when viewing in FireFox Personally I would review your pricing statement on P&P - it starts saying you charge £x no matter how much you order and then says for large items it is £y which is both conflicting and confusing. I personally would have the cart moved somewhere more visible. With it being below the page fold I cant tell it has done anything after I clicked add to cart until I scrolled down and found I had added an item 3 times. Why does Smiths Pet Centre own the copyright of your site? If the website I found for them is correct I assume they are nothing to do with you as they are in a different dialling code. Saying all that, looking at bluelinemedia.co.uk they have fairly basic missing opportunities and poor code in their own site. |

Unless of course blulinemedia have used the smithspetcentre site and adapted it for jaydeeliving.
In any case, the jaydeeliving seems to be owned by David Horsfield but the email link on the site is for Jon.... |

i understand that you want a simple site, but i think if the site looks more structured, it would look better. For instance, the first couple of seconds having looked at the site- i thought this is going to get some getting used to.. and looks confusing. A few alterations will make your site go a long way and user friendly and make viewers want to stay on your site.
Look at competitors- how there sites look, how yours could be better and differ from the rest. |

I know Blueline media designed Smiths Pet centre before they did ours.
But how did you come to the conclusion that they own the copyright to Jaydee Living? There are 3 directors in Jaydee Living, myself, my dad and a third party - the site is registered under my dad. Yeh i'm thinking of ways to move the shopping cart, Possibly into the bottom of the blue banner at the top, to the left of the search bar. You guys obviously know what your talking about, i won't go into how much i paid for the website etc but i have had a lot of problems from day one. Ok i realise you are probably going to suggest something completely radical like throwing it away and starting again, lol. But is there a few things i can do to help people find the site and use it better etc? I will try move the shopping cart to where i said earlier Add more company information at the bottom of every page What did you mean about the picture names? Do you mean renaming the product pictures and uploading them again? Is there anything else you can suggest? Don't suggest to much though or il have to pay consultancy fees! lol |
