Re: Ivertise Flash Site - 18-06-2008, 08:21 PM

EWD,

I would like to take this opportunity to also correct you on your claim that there are no successful e-commerce sites built in flash. Please visit http://flex.org/. Flex, also another product of Adobe, helps you build Rich Internet Application using the Flash framework. Large companies such as HP, Ebay, and others are all leading the way for sensible interfaces. Check out the Showcase section of that website. You may want to start looking into the emerging technologies. As I have said before, the Internet is no longer a new invention. It's now a part of our lives and has been moving forward ever since. I'm sure you don't want your clients to be left out on these opportunities.

Also it would seem unfavorable for me to team up with someone who is using the mobile phone, in that small screen, for something as crucial to their business like searching for possible industry partners on flash development.

Lastly, I don't believe Flash will reduce their search engine and social networking visibility to almost zero. I think that is an old myth and an unneccessary exaggeration. Unless of course you are trying to prove all the Flash developers at Adobe wrong? Try submit the words 'creating spice' on Google and see what happens. Just a reminder, Creating Spice is a full flash site. Besides, search engine may be a good way to advertise your services but no search engine guerilla campaign can ever beat a good referral for a job well done. Cheers!

I said almost no flash ecommerce sites - not the same as no sites.

Do a search for any product you can think of and you will have great difficulty finding a 100% flash driven e-commence website on page 1 of the results.

The flex website is HTML not Flash so it's not really an example of the success of flash.

And I would hope that you do rank well for the search term 'creating spice', but search for 'rich media development' (it's on your site) and you don't appear in the top 100.

Mobile internet is now big business - more and more people are using their phone or PDA to get information, my phone doesn't support flash so all those rich media sites would fail. Secondly, the search engines are delivering 'mobile only' results so again, flash driven sites could be excluded.

This is why flash will never be a strong contender in the SE stakes. And social networking relies on linking between pages, blogs, viral content and o on. If you build a 100% flash site how can I link to the specific content you provide deep within the site.

Adobe has been pushing the advantages of flash for years, why shouldn't they it's their product. But even with all the hype it has never caught on an altentaive to (X)HTML, CSS, PHP and so on.

The local football club can set up a blog in seconds. A shop can build an online store an a few hours. A society can have the PDF version of it's minutes ready for download as soon at they are written. you can't do all this with flash.

Flash is great for rich media, but because you need special skills to create the movie/website it is out of the reach 99% of the people building websites.

What you have created is wonderful and I applaud your talents, but my clients would disappear from the organic results if I converted their sites to flash - and that is why I stick with HTML.

If fact, we wouldn't even be having this exchange if teneric went flash!

I meant 'blasting' like a tunnel through mountains -- not like a shotgun approach. As long as the site meets your goals and your open to make changes then I say your good. Just keep adding to you resource through a philosphy of change going left and right but don't try to go deeper. Does that make sense?

See SiteSell.com they continuelly add pages and links from different angles, it is similar to help files in a software application. Or am I off my rocker?

Dependx,

I think I'm a little confused here as I believe I addressed my reply regarding 'blasting' to EWD and not to you. So I am not sure when you exactly mentioned 'blasting' in your posts, unless you and EWD are on the same boat?

Yes, I think it makes sense to change a little left and right but not go too deep. No not all, I do not think you are off your rocker.
