New format for old site. Please review. - 17-10-2006, 10:29 PM

Hi again,

I've re-coded my site to get rid of frames and wondered if someone could please review it for me. The site is http://www.ianedwardssculptor.co.uk .

If you have any design changes please let me know, I'm quite new to this and this is my first site.

Thanks again

hi mate,

i like the home page nice and simply with a very good picture that shows what you do, but the text is difficult to read as it overlaps the pictures on other pages.

Also the bar at the bottom of your home page which changes from woodcarving etc is not at the bottom on the other pages it appears to be in the middle, again messing with the text.

try a different layout for each page as i think you might have the same set up for each and all pages vary in length.

However i might be totally wrong as i'm new to building my owns sites also, and i change mine on a daily basis until i get sometihing i think is right.

good luck

Hi Novice,
Nice design, and some great sculptures! But you're going to have a great deal of trouble getting indexed and found in search engines because there's no content on the home page. Also, you're using js, which is search engines don't particularly like.

I only looked at your site with firefox, but the text on the other pages overlap the photos, which make it hard to read. I would add a php contact page.

Best of luck,
Eve

Yep, the text is definitely a problem. I think the black and grey will work well (in fact, I used that combination for my very first website back in 2000!)

its hard to get a site indexed when your site presentation is based on pictures - but sometimes its the only way to present a gallery type site.

so what i would do it make a clean html page writing all about the process, your work, buying sculptures etc ensuring good paragraphs etc and try to cover all different key phrases that people may use to search.

make sure the link to the page is in the top level of navigation.

Have you tried switching from black to white? So text is black and the background is white? Might be easier to read.

Apart from that, it's a good site, well done.

I agree about the text, chenge it from white to offwhite or very lite grey, it's just to hard to read.

Get rid of the wood carvings browse scuptures thingy along the bottom, it doesn't do anything except mess with the bottom of your pictures.

Black is the best colour to show off artwork, so keep that.

Also someone said about the lack of text, and search engines not finding the website, this is right, but another idea I have seen somewhere recently, is have the picture and leave a largish gap (4 to 5 inches), then write all sorts of good keyword rich text below, the average surfer doesn't read text anyway, and will only want to see the pictures, but the searc engines will see it, and rank you for relevant searches.

Thanks for all your good advise. I will change the colour of text to light grey.
Thanks again.
