Re: Reviews of my site would be great - 26-04-2007, 03:16 PM

Hi Jim

Thanks for your comments. You are partly correct in that if people want to run their own area for My town, they pay an upfront fee and then a monthly admin fee. That provides them with all their marketing material e.g. flyers, magazine promotions etc. What they earn from each business coming on board is their income, not mine. When a site is up and running there is an orange triangle, as alongside North Wales that takes you through to the town.

Yes I have researched into the bestof., about my area, city local, city visitor, my community times etc. etc. A lot of the feedback I received was a) the initial franchsie fee was very high b) the monthly fee they had to pay was also quite steep. Many people have stopped trading after a couple of years.

I have already done something similar to this but offline so online is a new venture. Yes, I do need to make an income but I also want it to be an affordable opportunity to others.

I believe competition is healthy, it proves there is a market. After all Richard Branson only got where he is by not inventing anything new, just taking what was out there already but doing it better.

Thanks for the info on the tags. I'll look into it further

The reason all the directory sites fail is because they don't get the traffic.

For example:

How do you search for a hotel? Do you openup your favourite directory and search or do you (like most people) use a search engine and type in 'hotels in location'. The organic results (ie not paid for) are usually specialist sites and a survey showed that many people will use two or three of these before making a choice.

It follows therefore that charging for listing in a directory is doomed to failure unless it is a very high ranking and popular site.

I'm not saying you will fail but your chances of survival will reduce unless you have a USP

Effective Web Design - It's not that difficult if you follow the rules.
