Site Upgrade - Your Views - 22-04-2007, 06:52 PM

Hi All,

I have just redesigned my website - www.tf-technical.co.uk and would like some feedback on design, navigation, content etc.

Any feedback will be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Toby

Hi Toby

I won't comment on functionality as that's not my remit but I'd say that the colours clash a little. (Maybe a bit strong?) I can't read your contact info in the red panel!

Agree, the colours are not so good. Try this excellent resource for some good guidance: http://www.colorsontheweb.com/combiningcolors.asp. The colour wizard is particularly good.

What is the purpose of the site? At the moment all it seems to do is promote Toby. Turn the site around, do not even mention your name - just tell me how you can make my life better. Try using phrases like: 'A few colour filters can transform a school play. If you want help on the best options then get in contact'.

I can't see any pictures of your work. And the CV is a complete waste of time, there is no detail to back up any of your claims.

You build the site using a WYSIWYG application. And it has provided you with a site that will not be indexed by the search engines. I robot stumbling across the site will see absolutely nothing. There is not one piece of indexable material on the site. Do a search for tf-technical and you will see what I mean. All the SERP shows is your copywrite!

Sorry to be so negative but you seem to have ignored all the good advice on how to build an effective website.

I'll chip in a bit...

There are no META tags at all - this is a bad as META tags are what give the search engine spiders an idea about what your website is all about.

All your text is actually images - as mentioned above... This gives the spiders nothing at all to "read", which means that you cannot get indexed by the search engines other than "there is a website here" but there is also another reason why this is a very very bad thing... If a disabled / partially sited visitor tried to browse your site with a screen reader - they wouldn't be able to... THIS IS DISCRIMINATION and could land you in hot water at some stage in the future.

Just out of curiosity - who designed the site? If it is a DIY effort then well done for the bright and bold colours and simplicity of the design, it doesn't actually look that bad (apart from the contact text which is unreadable). But if you have paid someone for this then it's not so good... Visually it's okay but technically it's not so good.
