Is there something wrong with my site? -
05-11-2005, 11:41 PM
Hi there,
I would welcome some advice as to if there is something wrong with my site as it does not seem to appear very high on the search engines for key phrase 'titanium rings'. I've been working on it for about 6 months now. [url]www.fatcowdesigns.com[url] Thank you. . |

According to Google the site is optimised for "Fat Cow Designs" as it is picking up "Fat Cow Design - original designer jewellery" as the page title and "Welcome to fat cow design - we are designers of ready made and bespoke titanium jewellery." as the page description. They don't seem to have the index page cached although they do some of the other pages and this will not help your cause.

Hi Ian,
I have been working on this site and the page title was changed about 6 weeks ago.It is now "titanium rings GETi,wedding rings, Fat Cow Designs, Birmingham, UK B19 6BH". Does this mean that Google is just behind the times a little and when it catches up the ranking will improve? Regards, Alan @ Fat Cow Designs |

In theory once Google spiders the page the rating should improve but I am wondering why the index page hasn't currently been cached by Google. Perhaps someone more worldly wise than I in the workings of search engines might know the answer.

There was a major Google DC "hiccup"
a few days ago, and after the latest "Jagger" update there were rumours that Google had lost a lot of websites & pages - maybe your index page just got lost in the update?I did notice looking through your source code that there are a lot of references to " file:///C%7C/WINDOWS/Desktop/Copy%20of%20cactushop5_1" This is a LOCAL address and not a REMOTE address - is your website hosted at home? ![]() Feel free to contact me with any website issues. |

Your METAtags need a lot of work. Start with DESCRIPTION, & ensure that the first 4-6 words have immediate impact & eye appeal -- as for the rest, for Heaven's sake don't put your address in -- yes, yes, I know, you didn't do this intentionally, but you also didn't understand that useless META tags like AUTHOR or CITY get grabbed for the browser (with IE, at least), so on my screen your window says "mens titanium rings GETi,wedding rings,FatCow Designs, Birmingham, UK, B18 6BH." (But sureley you knew that already...) Would you pay a painter to scrawl that on your shop sign? If not, what's it doing here?
Don't mention what you're using for materials if nobody's looking for it. Is anyone really searching for "GETi"... & if they are, would you stand out, or would you be competing with every site in the world that sells titanium rings for industrial equipment? Which brings us to KEYWORDS. If you're looking for overseas trade, use overseas keywords -- for instance, "jewelry" in the States, a goodly chunk of Canada, etc. While "unique" is good, I bet people are more likely to search for "custom" -- & "handmade" seems like another hit. I notice that the pairing "titanium jewellery" is absent -- was this intentional? Sit down with a basic HTML reference & learn how to most efficiently use keywords. It'll take you some time, then you'll be good at it. The front page is... okay. Take one of your less pricey items -- something I'd call "low-middle" in price -- & put that right square in the shopper's eye, with a pricetag. Impress them that you've got some impressive merchandise, it stands out from the dreck in the chain stores, & it doesn't cost dear. Hell, put up two or three or four such items, showing your range!! One of those could be a high-end custom piece you did -- put up a snap, then put SOLD in bug inarguable letters under the price: show your prospects that your abilities have cash value. What do you have? A cow... Grab 'em & drag 'em into your store. You do that by putting tempting items in the "window," then you start upselling as soon as they walk in the door. Your hits go up when others refer to you. Get them to put a link to your home page. Go out & post on related forums. Start a blog where you natter endlessly about the trade & craft & about your materials & products. |

Great post Anthony I agree with your comments
I would start by reducing the length of your title, description and keywords. Try and get some targeted phrases, maybe 2 or 3 and try and use them in all three tags. Make sure the title and description read porperly though! Dont just spam in your keywords. |
